Refuge du Glacier Blanc

The place
A Hautes-Alpes refuge at 2542 m in the commune of Pelvoux, at the heart of the Écrins massif, facing the Glacier Blanc and overlooked by the north faces of the Pelvoux, the Pic Sans Nom and the Ailefroides. On the approach trail to the Refuge des Écrins, reached in about 2 h 30 of walking from the Pré de Madame Carle (end of the road past the hamlet of Ailefroide). Sleeps 131 during the season and 35 when unstaffed. A first refuge was built in 1886 near the makeshift shelter climbers nicknamed the "Hôtel Tuckett"; now turned into an eco-museum, it was replaced in 1948 by the current refuge, construction of which began in 1942. Starting point for the Montagne des Agneaux, the Pic de Neige Cordier, the Pic du Glacier-d'Arsine, the Pic du Glacier-Blanc and the Pointe des Cinéastes; the Dôme de Neige des Écrins and Roche Faurio can also be climbed from this refuge when the Refuge des Écrins is full.
Getting there
Départ du parking du Pré de Madame Carle (1872 m). Distance : 4,3 km, dénivelé positif : 670 m. Durée : environ 3h30 à la montée, 2h30 à la descente. Sentier escarpé, équipé d'un câble et d'une échelle. En hiver/printemps avant l'ouverture de la route, deux itinéraires alternatifs réservés à un public averti : depuis le tunnel des Claux à Pelvoux (1283 m, 8 km, +1262 m, 4h) ou depuis la barrière d'Ailefroide (1532 m, 9 km, +1000 m, 3h30).
The setting
Le refuge est situé face au Glacier Blanc, dans un cadre minéral et glaciaire remarquable, dominé par les faces nord du Pelvoux, du Pic Sans Nom et des Ailefroides.
