The place

High-altitude refuge of the Cordillera Blanca (Ancash department, Peru), within Huascarán National Park (UNESCO World Heritage). The Cordillera Blanca stretches 200 km north to south between latitudes 8°08' and 9°58' S, includes several peaks over 6000 m, and 722 individual glaciers. The region is home to Huascarán (6768 m, Peru's highest point), Alpamayo (5947 m, one of the world's most beautiful peaks), and Artesonraju (6025 m, the famous mountain of the Paramount Pictures logo). Located around 3800 m, a typical altitude for approach refuges in the quebradas: Refugio Perú (Llanganuco, 4665 m) for Nevado Pisco, Refugio Llaca (Quebrada Llaca, managed by the Peruvian Mountain Guides Association) at the foot of Ranrapalca (6162 m), Refugio Huascarán at the foot of Huascarán. A base for acclimatization and approach for classic climbs.

Getting there

Approach from Huaraz via the Llanganuco, Llaca or Ulta quebradas. Huascarán National Park permit required.
