Refugio Gorra Blanca
The place
Unstaffed refuge on the Cerro Gorra Blanca near the Paso Marconi, in the northern sector of the Campo de Hielo Patagónico Sur in Chilean Patagonia, managed by CONAF (Corporación Nacional Forestal). Also known as Refugio Gorra Blanca. Installed in 2004 by the Instituto Chileno de Campos de Hielo. Fourteen bunks over sixty square metres. A strategic staging point for the international border crossing via the Paso Marconi, accessible from El Chaltén (Argentina). A refurbishment is under consideration by the Chilean Ministry of Defence and the Chilean Air Force.
Getting there
Le refuge se trouve sur un nunatak, à environ 4,5km au nord du Paso Marconi (1550m), une marche quasi plate d'environ 3 heures. L'accès classique part de Villa O'Higgins, traverse le lac O'Higgins jusqu'à Candelario Mancilla, puis rejoint le glacier et le Paso Marconi via plusieurs jours de trek sur le Campo de Hielo Sur — itinéraire réservé à des groupes équipés pour la progression glaciaire.
