The place
The Cabane du Barestet is a pastoral cabin at 1492 m altitude in the Couserans (Ariège), occupied by the shepherd from June 1 to October 15. Accessible via Col de Piéjau or from Saint-Lary. Previously shared between hunters and shepherds, it has been locked since December 2016 due to damage. On a knoll above the cabin stands a small stone oratory housing a statue of the Virgin Mary, facing the Bellongue valley below.
