Cabane de l'Étang d'Araing - Castillonais
The place
Sleeping places: 12 Places on mattress: 5 Indoor equipment: - 1 table (with a nice oilcloth cover!) - Several benches - 1 large fireplace - Upstairs: floor in very good condition (with 3 mattresses and 2 sleeping mats) able to take many more mattresses. Water: - You can fetch some at [->6292], 600 m away. - Follow the GR10 climbing SE, behind the rain gauge on a rise to the right of the flat area just above the hut, and you'll find a trickle coming from a "marshy" patch (in one of the photos below you can clearly see this trickle to the right of the hut, behind the rise). Sturdy, unlocked hut on the GR10, on a rise, right by and level with the Étang d'Araing dam (hence its name!), and 500 m from [->6292].
Getting there
Cabane solide et ouverte, située sur le tracé du GR10, sur une petite bosse près du barrage de l'étang d'Araing. Le bois de chauffage doit être apporté depuis le parking d'Anglade, aucun bois n'étant disponible sur place. Distincte du refuge gardé Jacques-Husson d'Araing (CAF, 52 places) situé à proximité.
The setting
Située à 1915 m, sans forêt à proximité, point d'eau accessible à moins de 100 m. Cabane à étage : rez-de-chaussée avec table, bancs et cheminée fonctionnelle ; à l'étage, plancher partiellement rénové avec matelas, capacité prévue de 12 places.
A word from the warden
Selon un témoignage de randonneur, un panneau au départ de la randonnée indiquait que la cabane était occupée par un berger de juin à octobre ; aucune structure de gestion (association, syndicat) n'est mentionnée dans les sources consultées, et rien n'indique si cette occupation pastorale saisonnière est toujours d'actualité.
