Bivouac de la Tour-Rouge
The place
The Bivouac de la Tour-Rouge is a high-altitude bivouac at 2820-2822 m on a ledge in the Mont Blanc massif, rebuilt in July 2021 more than 50 years after it was destroyed by avalanches. The new 8-bunk cabin was reinstalled on the same ledge thanks to the initiative of the Cham Community association, by volunteer climbers led by Jean-Sébastien Knoertzer. Historically (until 1973), it served as an early-morning starting point for the ascent: climbing the first tricky pitches by day, then managing the descent on the Nantillons glacier while the refreeze conditions were still good. Access: Montenvers, up onto the Mer de Glace, path towards the Refuge de l'Envers des Aiguilles; below the Tré La Porte glacier, cross the glacier towards the start of the route to the right of the Tour Rouge (fixed ropes in place).
