The place
Troisième refuge on Montagne Pelée (Martinique, France), at 1328 m elevation, on the upper flanks of the active volcano (1397 m at Le Chinois). Ascent refuge on the Aileron/Grande Savane circuits. High-altitude grassland area with mountain pineapple (Pitcairnia bifrons) and mosses, on the heritage site of the 8 May 1902 eruption (which destroyed Saint-Pierre, killing 30,000 people — the largest volcanic disaster of the 20th century before Mount Pelée's later activity).
