The place
Refuge at 1463 m (4800 feet) in the Delta Range (Alaska, United States), owned by the Alaskan Alpine Club. Construction began in 1961 after Bucky Wilson, a club member, discovered the site during a climbing expedition. Members spent four years hauling more than 100 loads of materials to build this 3.7 x 3 m structure. A library has accumulated over the decades. Sleeps 5 (rumor has it up to 10 have crammed in for a night). Access via the Castner Glacier — multiple routes (White Princess Branch, Direct Assault, Silvertip Branch); the retreat of the glacier is making the final approach increasingly tricky and dangerous. Water: melted snow in winter, a stream in spring, a reliable pond west of the cabin near Item Peak in summer.
Getting there
Départ depuis l'accès du glacier Castner : rester sur la moraine de droite jusqu'à apercevoir une langue de glace sur la gauche, puis traverser jusqu'à celle-ci. Plusieurs variantes ensuite : via la branche « White Princess », en « Direct Assault », ou via la branche Silvertip. Altitude du refuge : ~1463 m. Dénivelé positif : ~737 m. Distance : 7,8 miles. Durée annoncée : 4 à 8+ heures.
The setting
Le refuge est situé dans une prairie alpine verte épargnée entre deux branches du glacier Castner, au cœur de la chaîne du Delta (Delta Range) en Alaska. L'alimentation en eau varie selon la saison : un petit ruisseau au printemps, un étang à l'ouest en été, la fonte de neige en hiver.
