The place
Capacity: 72. The refuge was extended in 2003 with the construction of a second building just above the old refuge. Bivouacking possible around the refuge. During the staffed period: 72 beds, blankets, silk liners required (for sale on site if needed, 10€), indoor toilets, no running water, no sinks, no showers. Meals available, no kitchen area, no bring-your-own-food room, no heating, no wifi, no power outlet, pets not allowed. From the [->1047], reachable from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains by the Mont-Blanc tramway, cross the Désert de Pierre-Ronde via the steep path towards Mont Blanc. Pass the [->1046], climb the base of the Arête Payot and reach the refuge by crossing the Tête-Rousse glacier. The refuge is only visible 15 minutes before arrival. The refuge is staffed from 15 May to 26 September 2023. Booking for the refuges on the normal route of Mont Blanc (Refuges du Nid d'Aigle, de Tête-Rousse and du Goûter) is subject to special regulations set out by prefectural order (please read below). It includes a single booking system requiring mandatory identification of all participants. Tête Rousse base camp (see photo): By exception, the Tête Rousse base camp is the only bivouac site authorized by the state within the entire classified Mont-Blanc site. Getting there
Départ : gare SNCF de Saint-Gervais-le-Fayet, puis Tramway du Mont-Blanc jusqu'à la gare du Nid d'Aigle (2372 m). Un justificatif est exigé par la préfecture de Haute-Savoie, à présenter lors des contrôles et à l'arrivée au refuge. Durée de marche et dénivelé non précisés par le site officiel.
The setting
Le refuge est situé au bord du petit glacier de Tête-Rousse, face à la paroi nord-ouest de l'Aiguille de Bionnassay, sur la « voie royale » du Mont Blanc, avant le passage du Grand Couloir et la montée à l'Aiguille du Goûter. L'approche depuis le Nid d'Aigle traverse le désert minéral de Pierre-Ronde et longe l'arête Payot, un paysage de haute montagne typique où le refuge reste invisible jusqu'aux 15 dernières minutes de marche.
A word from the warden
Gardiens Antoine Rattin (coordinateur) et Léo Bocher. Le refuge se situe sur « la Voie royale du Mont-Blanc », étape avant la traversée du grand couloir et l'ascension de l'aiguille du Goûter. Salle des crampons avec casiers et pantoufles. Restauration : snack 9h-16h, dîner 18h-19h, petit-déjeuner à 4h ou 7h.
