Stanley Mitchell Hut
The place
ACC alpine hut at 2,060 m in the Little Yoho Valley of Yoho National Park (British Columbia, Canada). Dormitory-style, 22 beds in winter and 26 in summer. Named after Stanley Mitchell, co-founder of the Alpine Club of Canada in 1906, secretary-treasurer 1907-1930; died in 1940 shortly after the hut's completion. Hans Gmoser based his ski-touring operations here from the 1950s to the 1970s (the business that would become Canadian Mountain Holidays, heli-skiing). Designated a Federal Heritage Building in 1997. Successive renovations: shutters in 1952, stone foundation and metal roof in 1961, replacement of base logs plus new veranda and plumbing in 1978, insulation in 1980, windows in 1994. A bit of history
Named after Stanley Mitchell, co-founder of the ACC in 1906 (secretary-treasurer 1907-1930, died 1940). Base for Hans Gmoser's ski touring 1954-mid 70s (future Canadian Mountain Holidays).
