The place
Basic 6-bunk hunting hut at 11 m in Rakiura National Park (Stewart Island, Southland, NZ), managed by the Rakiura Hunter Camp Trust. Multi-fuel stoves, rainwater tank (1,000 L), mattresses, benches, meat safe, toilets. No cooking equipment supplied — bring your own. Flat fee NZD 30/person (max 10 days). Untreated water must be boiled (rats present on the island). Booking required via the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre. No DOC track: self-guided navigation with map/compass/GPS required. Built in 2004 by members of the Southland NZ Deerstalkers' Association, funded by the charitable trust.
