Smoky Hunters Hut

The place

Basic six-bunk shelter for hunters, maintained by the Rakiura Hunter Camp Trust in Rakiura National Park, Stewart Island/Rakiura, Southland region (New Zealand). Built in 2015 to replace temporary plastic shelters. Equipment: multi-fuel burners (bring your own dry wood), 1,000-liter rainwater tank, mattresses, benches, pantry, toilet, basic tools (axe/saw, broom, shovel). No cooking utensils or cooking equipment provided. Untreated water must be boiled before use. Access by chartered boat, helicopter, or the North West Circuit Track. Rate: NZD 30 per person for a stay of up to 10 days, booking required at the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre.
