Rifugio Capanna Aosta
The place
Capacity: 30 places, 14 in the winter room. Staffed from late June to early September. Never having gone up there myself, I only know the first part of the route, which coincides with the access to [->1595]. If you drive up the upper Valpelline, you need to pass Bionaz and go up to La Léchère, where the Place Moulin dam (P) is located. From there a gravel road runs alongside the lake, crosses the Oren stream, and reaches Prarayer. Waymarking has been put in place leading through the long combe of Tza-de-Tzan up to the hut. From the dam to the hut, allow 4 hours. If you take the bus (SAVDA) Aosta-Bionaz (bus station opposite the railway station), you'll need to add the 6 km between Bionaz and La Léchère, bringing the total to around 6-7 hours — unless you travel in flip-flops wearing just a cap... Getting there
Accès depuis le val de Valpelline, en passant par Bionaz jusqu'au lac de Place-Moulin, puis par une piste jusqu'au Rifugio Prarayer. La dernière partie du parcours comporte un passage sur roche lisse équipé de chaînes et de marches. Environ 4 heures de marche depuis le parking.
A bit of history
Une première cabane fut construite en 1908. Détruite par une avalanche en 1951, elle fut reconstruite et rouverte en 1956. De nouveau endommagée par une avalanche en 1990 (toiture arrachée), le bâtiment actuel date de 1995.
A word from the warden
Le refuge appartient à la section CAI d'Aoste, qui en confie la gestion à une coopérative locale. Ouverture saisonnière : mi-mars à mi-mai, puis juillet-août ; 24 places en gestion et 14 places en local hivernal toujours ouvert.
