Refugio Frey
The place
A staffed hut located at the foot of Cerro Catedral, in the Bariloche mountain range (Argentine Patagonia), at 1700 m of altitude. Open year-round, it is a major stopover for trekking, climbing on the famous granite spires of the Frey cirque, and off-piste skiing in winter. Capacity of around 35 places, with an equipped kitchen, sanitary facilities and heating. Bivouacking tolerated nearby. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners served by the permanent staff. Booking by email recommended, especially in high season.
Getting there
Accès pédestre uniquement, plusieurs itinéraires possibles depuis Bariloche (secteur Cerro Catedral). Sentier traditionnel : départ du parking du Cerro Catedral, environ 10 km, dénivelé positif ~700 m, ~4h de montée (retour possible en 2h30 via la Picada Eslovena). Le sentier suit la vallée du ruisseau Van Titter, passe un pont après ~2h de marche puis le lieu-dit Piedritas, avant d'atteindre le refuge à 1700 m d'altitude. Variante Picada Eslovena : départ du poste de garde du Lac Gutierrez (Villa Los Coihues), ~5h au total, pente prononcée. Variante Filo del Catedral : départ de Punta Princesa ou du refuge Lynch (Alta Patagonia), 3 à 3h30, à réserver aux jours de beau temps.
The setting
Le refuge est situé au pied de l'Aguja Frey, dans le Parc National Nahuel Huapi (zone sud du massif du Cerro Catedral), aux abords de la lagune Toncek — un site emblématique de l'escalade reconnu mondialement. Quatre ambiances saisonnières bien marquées : printemps (fonte des neiges, floraison), été (trekking et escalade), automne (forêts colorées de lenga et de ñire), hiver (sports hivernaux, neige abondante).
