Biei Fuji Hinan-goya
The place
Unstaffed emergency refuge on Mount Bieifuji (1888 m), south of Daisetsuzan National Park on Hokkaidō (Japan). A small prefabricated cabin located about 1 km east of the Bieifuji summit, capacity 20 people. Very basic: a simple outhouse-style booth for privacy with its own portable toilet. Water collected from a nearby stream (may run dry in early August, but other snow patches are a few minutes' walk away). Large open area in front of the cabin for pitching a tent. As with many Hokkaidō refuges, technically reserved for emergencies — don't rely on its availability, bring all your own gear. An important stage on the Daisetsuzan Grand Traverse, one of Japan's great wilderness traverses. A subarctic Japanese setting: active volcanism (Tokachi-dake still active), pumice from the 1926 eruption, dwarf forests and alpine meadows. Managed by Biei town hall (☎ 0166-92-1111).
