The place
The Yajidaira emergency refuge, set at 1488 m in the Azuma range, in the Bandai-Asahi National Park area (Fukushima Prefecture, Japan). Managed by Fukushima Prefecture, unstaffed and free year-round, designed as a temporary shelter in bad weather — there is no organised campsite nearby. Standard rules of use apply: equipment shared between users, respect for other occupants, resources may be used but must be left clean. If snow blocks the entrance, exit through the windows. One of six emergency refuges (避難小屋) managed by the prefecture in the mid-mountain zone. Access from Jodoplate (浄土平, 1600 m, car park at the Bandai-Azuma Skyline pass) via the Kamanuma pond (鎌沼) trail. An exceptional Azuma setting: active volcanism (Issaikyo-zan, permanent fumaroles), high-altitude peat bogs, dwarf beech and Maries' fir forests, views of Mount Bandai (1816 m) and the Pacific coast on clear days.
