Refuge de l'Aigle
The place
Perched at 3,450 m on the Rocher de l'Aigle, above the Romanche valley, this high-mountain hut clings to an exceptional site in the Écrins massif, at the foot of the north face of the Meije (municipality of La Grave). Built in 1910 then rebuilt in 2014 while keeping part of the original structure, it mainly serves as a starting point for ascents of the Meije Orientale, the Doigt de Dieu, and the traverse to the Refuge du Promontoire.
Getting there
The setting
A bit of history
#### ️ History of Refuge de l'Aigle Origins and Renewal: Erected in 1910, Refuge de l'Aigle has long witnessed numerous feats in the Écrins massif. After changes in 1986 and an ambitious rebuild in 2014, it now blends tradition and innovation. Its historic walls were incorporated into a contemporary building, reaffirming its iconic character. #### ️ The Meije's Perch: Location and Access Hut Coordinates: Nestled at 3,450 metres of altitude on the Rocher de l'Aigle promontory, this hut is an essential stop at the foot of the Meije. Reaching it from the Pont des Brebis demands precision and endurance, over a route alternating between trails and glaciers. Ascent Challenges: The route crosses technical passages such as the Vire Amieux, climbed via cabled sections, then follows the right bank of the Tabuchet glacier. This climb is rated difficulty F, a genuine mountaineering trial even before reaching the hut. #### ️ The New Face of Refuge de l'Aigle Modernity and Comfort: The modernised building now offers 30 beds, a multipurpose room and a dedicated space for the wardens. The hut's new look honours its predecessor while promising more comfort for summit-seeking adventurers. #### ️ From the Aigle to the Summits Legendary Ascents: Many mountaineers stop here to conquer legendary summits such as the Meije Orientale or the traverse to the Promontoire. Routes range in difficulty from PD to D, each offering a unique high-mountain experience. #### Distinctions and Heritage Value Recognition: The hut has not only been physically transformed; its historical significance and renovation have earned it attention and admiration. However, no specific awards won by this recent version of the hut are mentioned. #### Refuge de l'Aigle in the Collective Imagination Cultural Inspirations: While the Aigle does not appear explicitly in popular tales, its presence is implicit in numerous books and accounts, testifying to the adventures it has inspired. #### To Go Further Suggested Reading: Pierre Chapoutot, "La Meije: Reine de l'Oisans" François Labande, "Sauver la montagne" W.A.B Coolidge, "Récits de courses en Dauphiné (1870-1895)"
