The place

Staffed alpine refuge at 3092 m on the ridge leading to the Meije, in the Écrins National Park (Hautes-Alpes), run by the FFCAM. Capacity 30 staffed spaces in 3 dormitories, 18 spaces in the winter section in 1 dormitory. Spectacular setting on rocky terrain, overlooking the Vallon des Étançons. Serves as a base for mountaineers attempting the Meije traverse and for experienced hikers; a stage for ski touring in winter. Access currently limited due to the road closure: the only possible approaches are via the Enfetchores and the Brèche de la Meije using the La Grave cable car, routes requiring mountaineering skills and equipment.
