The place

Serviced alpine hut with 33 bunks managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, Canterbury (South Island, New Zealand), at 2,150 meters elevation. Rate 40 NZD/night, 20 NZD for NZAC members. Payment mandatory at the Aoraki/Mt Cook visitor centre; standard backcountry hut passes not accepted. Daily weather radio bulletin at 6:45 pm for all alpine huts in the park. Exposed site: ongoing rockfall risk affecting the Grand Plateau, the hut itself, and the Linda Glacier route. GNS Science 2021 assessment: individual daily fatality risk between 1/66,000 and 1/100,000 per day for a 14-hour stay on site. Ice avalanches, notably earthquake-triggered, are the main factor. Risk level judged "substantial but tolerable" for experienced mountaineers, potentially "too high" for those with low risk tolerance.
