North Arm Hut
The place
Large DOC 'Great Walk' category hut with 24 bunks, right on the beach at North Arm on Paterson Inlet (Rakiura National Park, Stewart Island, Southland, South Island, New Zealand). Key stop on the Rakiura Track, one of New Zealand's 10 Great Walks. The living area was substantially extended in 2012: a large bench, several big tables and an outdoor deck. Running water, wood burner and long-drop toilets. Water is untreated — boil before use; the heavy rat presence on Stewart Island increases the risk of tank contamination. The neighbouring North Arm Campsite is a 2-minute uphill walk away, with 4 sandy sites set among mature rimu forest. Wildlife: kiwi are often heard, and occasionally seen with patience. Booking is compulsory (Backcountry Hut Passes and Tickets are not valid on the Great Walks).
