Mt. Mokoto Ginreiso Hut

The place

An emergency hut at 820 m on Mount Mokoto, in eastern Hokkaido. Managed free of charge by the South Abashiri forestry department, rebuilt in 2013: "small but well insulated", single-storey with a raised sleeping area and mezzanine. Charcoal/wood stove, nearby water source, bio-toilet, Docomo network coverage. No electricity or bedding. In winter, the door can be buried in snow, entry sometimes via the upstairs window. Emergency shelter status — short stays and cleanliness requested. A Hokkaido network maintained by volunteers.
