Monte Rosa Hütte
The place
Capacity: 120. Staffed from mid-March to mid-May and mid-June to mid-September (see the online booking calendar). The busiest hut in Switzerland and the most modern. Completely rebuilt at the end of 2009, the hut (if it can still be called that) is a masterpiece of architecture (that's not just something I wrote — quite the opposite!) and of ecology. Thanks to its south face covered in photovoltaic solar panels and other thermal collectors, the hut covers 90% of its energy needs. The hut's website gives all the details of its history as well as its price list. Visa and Mastercard accepted. There is a 12-bed winter room. Emergency radio. Note that the hut is two to three minutes' walk from Swisscom coverage. Swiss coordinates: 629.146 / 089.553. The hut sits at the foot of Monte Rosa, at a spot called 'Plattje'. It overlooks the Gorner glacier, named after the Gornergrat next to it, terminus of the railway of the same name. In winter: 5h from Zermatt via the Gornergletscher; 4h from Furi; 1h30 from Stockhorn station; 2h30 from the Gornergletscher after descending via Schwarztor or from Trockener Steg. In summer: 5h from Zermatt via the Gornergletscher; 4h from Furi; 3-4h from the Rotenboden station of the Gornergrat railway. ATTENTION - IMPORTANT: the Monte Rosa hut is a high-mountain hut, not a tourist hiking hut. The climb to the hut from Rotenboden first follows a well-equipped footpath. Crossing the glacier (blue-white waymarking) requires suitable equipment (mountain boots, ice axe or poles, crampons, even rope). Glacier access and the route across it, however, change very often and can sometimes be very tricky. Good physical condition is essential. CAS Monte Rosa section. Getting there
La cabane se rejoint en été en quatre à neuf heures de marche selon le point de départ, la station de Rotenboden du chemin de fer du Gornergrat étant l'accès le plus courant. La traversée du glacier du Gorner est nécessaire, ce qui impose crampons, corde et piolet.
The setting
Perchée à 2883 mètres sur un plateau rocheux au pied nord-ouest du massif du Mont Rose, la cabane domine le glacier du Gorner et offre une vue dégagée sur le Cervin ainsi que sur les sommets voisins.
A bit of history
La première cabane, baptisée « Bétemps », a été construite en 1894-1895 par le Club Alpin Suisse, avec vingt-cinq places. Agrandie en 1918 puis en 1929, elle a pris son nom actuel de Monte-Rosa-Hütte en 1929, avant qu'une nouvelle structure de quatre-vingt-six places ne soit érigée en 1939-1940. La cabane actuelle, conçue comme projet d'étudiants pour le cent-cinquantième anniversaire de l'École polytechnique fédérale de Zurich, a été inaugurée le 25 septembre 2009 après six ans de conception ; sa structure en bois à enveloppe d'aluminium est alimentée à environ 90% par l'énergie solaire.
A word from the warden
Cette cabane est gardée durant la saison d'ouverture par une équipe assurant l'accueil et le service de restauration en montagne. En dehors des périodes de gardiennage, un local d'hiver en libre-service reste accessible pour les urgences.
