McMurdo Cabin
The place
Backcountry cabin managed by the Columbia Valley Hut Society in British Columbia (Canada). Suited to wildlife viewing, scenery and high-altitude hiking in summer, as well as ski touring in winter. Capacity, access, and rates available on request directly from the society (lets.toure@gmail.com).
Getting there
Public cabin maintained by Columbia Valley Hut Society (cvhsinfo.org). Reservations for overnight use. Rustic one-room cabin. Summer activities: high-altitude hiking (divide to International Basin, east to David Peak, former mining site to the south, routes toward Silent Lake/Silent Pass). Winter activities: backcountry skiing (experienced backcountry terrain).
The setting
Near the upper valley of McMurdo Creek, Columbia-Shuswap district (British Columbia, 51.05°N 117.15°W, 1753 m, Canada). Mature spruce forest near a marshy meadow. Access to Spillimacheen Glacier.
A bit of history
Old one-room log cabin built in the early 1900s as a mining camp for work near the Spillimacheen Glacier. Rustic Forest Service cabin. Minor renovations in the original style have preserved its rustic charm.
