Hornet Lookout Cabin

The place

Historic fire lookout built in 1922-1923 by seasonal USFS employees for $719.38, in response to the great fire of 1910. Located atop Hornet Peak at 2,055 m elevation (6,744 ft), in the Flathead National Forest (Montana), 45 miles north of Columbia Falls. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 19 August 1983. Capacity for 2 people: livable ground floor and 360° observation mezzanine (views of Glacier National Park and Kintla Lake on clear days). Rustic amenities: propane stove, propane lantern, two camp beds, small wood stove for heating. Access via roughly a 1-mile hike from the parking area. Season mid-June to October.
