The place

Serviced-category DOC hut with eight bunks at 878 m in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park (Canterbury): the oldest hut in the park, since restored. Facilities: gas cooker, fireplace with access to firewood (key to be collected at the visitor centre), separate toilets. Water and facilities are also available to campers on site. Access via the Hooker Valley Track: 2 hours one way from the White Horse Hill car park, to Stocking Stream, then across tussock moorland following orange markers and poles. Rates: 50 NZD adult and 25 NZD child aged 5-17 per night (free under 4) for the hut, 15 NZD adult and 7.50 NZD child for camping. White Horse Hill car park 5 NZD/hour or 25 NZD/day (free under 20 min), annual pass available. Booking: will open once the completion date for the second footbridge has been confirmed — check availability before travelling.
