Gîte de Bélouve
The place
Trekking lodge located at 1500 m elevation on the eastern rampart of the Cirque de Salazie, on Réunion Island. Overlooks a grand panorama within a cocoon of tropical forest. Set within the Forêt de Bélouve, one of the best-preserved primary forests on the island, home to tree ferns, fanjans and endemic flora. Starting point for the island's most beautiful hikes: Trou de Fer, Sentier des Tamarins, Cap Anglais toward the Piton des Neiges.
Getting there
From the Plaine des Palmistes, follow the forest road to the Gîte de Bélouve. Picnic area, kiosk and viewpoint table on site.

A bit of history
Le gîte est associé à un ancien téléphérique forestier, le « Paul Charly », qui reliait le site au cirque de Salazie depuis Hell-Bourg ; inauguré le 24 novembre 1954, il fut endommagé par le cyclone Hyacinthe en janvier 1980 et n'a jamais été remis en service. Le nom « Bélouve » viendrait du terme malgache « Belova », signifiant « riche héritage ».
