Gazelle in the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF), Prince of Wales Peninsula area (southeastern Kerguelen archipelago, southern Indian Ocean, France), at 27 m elevation, on the subantarctic coast. Part of a continuous TAAF Kerguelen cluster (batches 320-393, 11 entries). COUNTRY ANOMALY: TAAF is not listed separately; attribution to France is consistent with the administrative status of TAAF as an overseas territory (5th district). TAAF naturalist refuge cabin, Gazelle (named after the German ship Gazelle of the 1874-1876 Deutsche Nordpolar-Expedition, a Kerguelen scientific expedition + Kerguelen, "Islands of Desolation", 7215 km², discovered by Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen on 12 February 1772, 500 plant species, Kerguelen cabbage, Pringlea antiscorbutica, an anti-scurvy plant + storms of ~150 km/h, the "roaring forties" and "furious fifties" + IPEV Port-aux-Français scientific base, 45-100 overwintering staff + wildlife heritage, Mirounga leonina, southern elephant seals, 30,000 individuals + Aptenodytes patagonicus, king penguins, the Ratmanoff colony of 300,000, iconic + whaling heritage 1780-1913, the end of an era, Balaenoptera physalus, 250,000 killed in the Antarctic).
