The place
Eland Hut in the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, Heidelberg/Nigel sector (Gauteng, South Africa), at 1685 m altitude, on the Witwatersrand plateau. New South Africa cluster that appeared in batch 338. Rustic hut of the Gauteng provincial reserve ("Eland" = Cape eland Tragelaphus oryx, Africa's largest antelope, males up to 900 kg, effectively an elephant-sized bovid), an area of highveld grassland (2000-2400 m South African high plateau) and Suikerbosrand (33,000 ha, reintroduction of eland + gemsbok + oryx + hartebeest in the 1960s after erosion from farming), heritage of the Nguni-Sotho-Tswana (South African Bantu peoples, 11 official languages under the 1994 Constitution) and the Witwatersrand gold rush of 1886 (the largest gold deposit in the world, 40% of cumulative human production, 100,000 t over 130 years).
