Douglas Rock Hut
The place
A Standard Hut managed by the Department of Conservation, at the head of the Copland Valley, in Westland Tai Poutini National Park (West Coast of the South Island). Built in 1931, it marks the inland end of the Copland Track about 25 km from State Highway 6; the full traverse takes 2 to 4 days, and the upper section from Welcome Flat Hut adds a further 7 km with 300 m of elevation gain in about 3 hours. This upper route is less maintained and reserved for experienced trampers and mountaineers.
