Refuge du Col de Balme

The place
Staffed refuge located at the Col de Balme at 2,190 m altitude, on the French-Swiss border between Chamonix and the Trient valley. A stage on the Tour du Mont-Blanc, popular with hikers, mountain bikers and paragliders. Dormitories with duvets and pillows (bring a sleeping-bag liner). Solar-only electricity — hot showers depending on sunshine. Half-board at 62 CHF/€ (dinner, night, breakfast). Traditional cooking with local produce. Open mid-June to end of September. Packed lunches to order the evening before.
Getting there
Depuis Le Tour (France) : environ 1h40 par un bon sentier via Charamillon (ou 10 min depuis l'arrivée du télésiège des Autannes). Depuis Trient (Suisse), au départ du Peuty : environ 2h, avec 3 variantes (directe, via Les Tseppes +45 min, ou via Les Grands +45 min).
