Chapelle du Mont Thabor

The place

Notre-Dame des Sept-Douleurs chapel at the summit of Mont Thabor at 3178 m, at the crossroads of Savoie, Hautes-Alpes and Italy. Written record dating back to 1648; probably older still, possibly linked to an ancient sun cult. Rebuilt several times after fires, enlarged in 1816 and restored in 1875. Currently closed to access: very large structural cracks several centimeters wide in the corners, particularly to the northeast, risk of collapse. Door no longer closes. Remains an exceptional viewpoint over the whole of the Alps, accessible via the Mont Thabor mountaineering routes.
