The place

Historic DOC alpine hut located at 1,263 m on the southwest face of the Chancellor Ridge, more than 200 m above the Fox Glacier in Westland Tai Poutini National Park (West Coast). Twelve bunks (including a dedicated dormitory, formerly the "Women's Room"). Heritage-listed building: "the oldest alpine hut still on its original site", built by carrying materials by hand before the helicopter era, classified Historic Places Trust Category 2, the least-modified example of early alpine construction in the region. Maintained by DOC (Fox Glacier office) under a 1991 conservation plan preserving the historic corrugated iron, the original timber frame, and the intact congoleum linoleum. Rate NZ$25 adult and NZ$12.50 youth (age 11-17) per night. Backcountry Hut Pass and standard tickets not accepted. Managed in consultation with the Alpine Clubs.
