The place
Basic 4-bunk hunting hut at 13 m in Rakiura National Park (Stewart Island, Southland, NZ), owned and managed by the Rakiura Hunter Camps Trust. Multi-fuel stoves, rainwater tank (1,000 L), mattresses, benches, meat safe, toilets. No cooking equipment provided. Flat rate NZ$30/person (max 10 days). Untreated water must be boiled (rats on the island). Booking required via the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre. Built around 1986 by the NZ Forest Service, upgraded in 1996 by private volunteers, maintained since 2000 by the Rakiura Hunter Camps Charitable Trust.
