DOC "Standard" category hut at 179 m in the Karangarua Valley, within Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast (South Island, New Zealand). Six bunks, no booking (first come, first served). Fee: 10 NZD adult / 5 NZD youth (5-17 years) / free 0-4 years, paid via the Standard Hut Ticket in the honesty box, or an annual Backcountry Hut Pass. Access on foot in 4 to 6 hours from SH6. Good base for hunting Himalayan tahr (Cassel tahr block). The Karangarua Valley Track links Cassel Flat Hut to Lame Duck Hut further upstream. A typical stopover in the glacial backcountry of the West Coast.
