Cabanes de la Mortadelle

The place

A group of cabins on the Kerguelen archipelago, in the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF) district, at 159 meters elevation. The site includes a main building used for accommodation and several outbuildings for supplies and equipment. Indicative capacity of 4 to 6 minimal bunks, with complete survival equipment. Often occupied by research teams on assignment (ornithologists, zoologists, geologists, physicists). Access is very demanding: crossing torrents, moraines, snowfields, peat bogs, crevasses, lava flows, exposed to rain and winds that can exceed 200 km/h; polar-Antarctic hiking gear is essential, along with very sturdy footwear (abrasive volcanic terrain). One of eleven cabins in the TAAF network on Kerguelen (along with Jacky, Molloy, Saint Malo, Port-Couvreux, etc.). Access is strictly regulated via TAAF missions (no tourist accommodation).
