Cabane du Suet
The place
Very small unstaffed cabin in the Bornes-Aravis massif, at 1,600 m altitude (Haute-Savoie). Very cramped space that can barely fit one person for the night; a door and a tiny window (25 × 25 cm) as the only sources of light. Consists of an entrance room (two-thirds of the cabin) and a small nook behind a door serving as a wood store. Equipment: stove (old but functional), kindling in stock, small table, logs used as chairs, brooms, shovels and saws. No water nearby; a small spring 600 m below, near the start of the path. Access from Saint-Jean-de-Sixt (car park of the "Lait et Bouse" farm at Forgeassoud Dessus, 990 m), 1 to 2 h walking.
Getting there
Départ du parking près de la ferme « Milk and Bouse », lieu-dit « Forgeassoud dessus » (990 m), à Saint-Jean-de-Sixt. Suivre les panneaux indiquant « Le Suet » ; chemin facile à suivre mais parfois raide. Compter 1h à 2h de marche. Vers 1500 m, attention à une zone de lapiaz (risque en cas de neige).
The setting
Cabane en bois minuscule au toit en tôles, nichée dans une zone de lapiaz au-dessus de 1500 m. Pas de point d'eau à proximité immédiate : la source la plus proche se trouve 600 m de dénivelée plus bas.
