The place

Unstaffed cabin set at 1205 m in the Monts du Cantal (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), a few dozen metres from a river on flat ground. Located at the heart of the Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Nature Park — the largest regional park in mainland France, created in 1977. The Monts du Cantal sector forms one of the largest volcanoes in Europe (formerly active from -13 to -2 million years ago). Interior: packed-earth floor, two tables and four wooden benches, an old folding single metal bed frame, two old mattresses in poor condition. Built from softwood (sapwood) on a cemented foundation, moderate insulation, no stove. A rustic emergency stop or picnic break. Exceptional setting amid the Cantal's volcanic landscapes: traditional burons (shepherds' shelters of the Cantal), summer pastures, beech and fir forests. Emblematic wildlife: roe deer, wild boar, red kite, booted eagle, hen harrier. A stage on the trails of the Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Nature Park, near the Burons de Cabrespine (1360 m) and Rauffet (1210 m).
