Cabane de la Montagnette
The place
Historic pastoral cabin set at 2250 m in the Ubaye massif, on the southern edge of the Sommet de la Montagnette (Embrunais-Ubaye, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence / Hautes-Alpes). Built in the 19th century by shepherds from Saint-Vincent-les-Forts as a summer-pasture shelter, the Montagnette was used for pastoral farming until the 1980s; difficult access and the small number of sheep it could accommodate led to the site being abandoned. The cabin was restored and heightened in the summer of 2012. Current capacity: 4 to 5 seated places, equipped with a table and 2 benches fixed to the wall. No water nearby — go down toward Saint-Vincent for about a hundred meters for firewood. A remarkable position facing the panorama of the Trois-Évêchés and the Brec de Chambeyron. A mineral and forested setting in the high valleys of Embrunais: larches, subalpine meadows, and emblematic wildlife including chamois, marmot and golden eagle. A stopover on the snowshoe and ski-touring routes of the Saint-Vincent-les-Forts / Sommet de la Montagnette sector.
