The place
Cabane de BUS (short for "Baie US"), on the beach of Baie Américaine at the northeast of Île de la Possession, Crozet archipelago (French Southern and Antarctic Lands). At about 5 m elevation. About 2 h 30 - 3 h walk from Alfred Faure base: crossing seven rivers and climbing more than 900 m of cumulative elevation gain over ~8 km. One of three cabins on Île de la Possession, built and maintained by IPEV (Institut Polaire Paul-Émile Victor) to house scientists during campaigns away from the base. The old English name ("America bay") likely refers to a whaling ship among the first American hunters at Crozet in the early 19th century; remains of 19th-century seal-hunter camps nearby. Structure: main cabin with 5 mattresses + kitchen + stove + provisions; "arbec" cabin (log book) used for storage with 2 additional mattresses. Gas heating, solar panels.
