Black Bear Lake Cabin

The place

A primitive pre-cut cedar log cabin ("pan-abode" style, 3.6 × 3.6 m) on the shores of Black Bear Lake, in the Klawock Mountains on Prince of Wales Island (Tongass National Forest, Southeast Alaska). A clear, cold lake ringed by peaks reaching nearly 1,220 m. Capacity 6 people on wooden bunk beds without mattresses. Facilities: table, benches, wood stove for heating, outdoor toilet, kitchen counter, shelves, cupboards, broom. No running water or electricity. Access only by floatplane from Ketchikan (~80 km as the crow flies). Bring food, drinking water, Bio Brick logs, sleeping bags, mattresses, stove and fuel, utensils, lighter, lamp, toilet paper, first aid kit, garbage bags. Lake ice-free from mid-June to September; floatplane access impossible from October to mid-June (lake frozen). Rate $30/night Apr-Sep; $25 Oct-Mar. Booking via recreation.gov.
