Bivouac San Camillo
The place
Bivouac at 2735 m near the Lago della Rossa, below the Croce Rossa-Punt d'Arnas-Punta Maria ridge (Val di Viù, Italian Piedmont). Small Pilone San Camillo chapel nearby. Capacity of 18 beds, 220V outlets, common room, water and outdoor toilets. Always open, unstaffed: bring a liner, voluntary contribution in the on-site box. Summer access: drive from Usseglio to the Vallone d'Arnas barrier, then 3h on foot via mule track and path (grade E). Winter access: same route in 6h30, recommended only with well-stabilised snow. Annual celebration on the first Saturday of August with shuttle and paid helicopter transport. Managed by the CAI Lanzo section, contact 360 44 49 49.
Getting there
Été : depuis Usseglio, accès en voiture jusqu'à la barrière du Vallone d'Arnas, puis sentier menant au Lago della Torre puis au bivouac — difficulté E, environ 3h de marche. Hiver : itinéraire à ski/raquettes depuis Usseglio, difficulté E, environ 6h30, nécessite un manteau neigeux bien consolidé.
The setting
Le bivouac se situe à 2735 m d'altitude, à proximité du lac artificiel della Rossa, au pied de la chaîne Croce Rossa - Punta d'Arnas - Punta Maria (Valle di Viù, Alpes Graies, Piémont). Une petite chapelle attenante, le « Pilone San Camillo », marque le site : une première chapelle construite en 1959 fut détruite par une avalanche en 1969, puis le bivouac actuel fut édifié en juillet 1990.
