Bivouac de l'Envers des Dorées
The place
Sleeping places: 18. Places on mattresses: 18. This is an unstaffed refuge-bivouac split into two parts. Built in 1993, refurbished in 2024. Booking is now mandatory to access the cabin. However, the entrance vestibule, which has an emergency phone, is accessible year-round without restriction. Small black cabin, warm all-wood interior. 18 bunk places with duvets and pillows. Silk liner mandatory. Table, stools. Two equipped kitchen corners with a gas cooker/oven, a two-burner stove, cutlery for 18 people, gas, pots, fondue burners and pots, thermoses, kitchen linen, etc. Electric lighting, USB sockets, phone linked to the Valais cantonal police, small first-aid kit. No catering service of course, but drinks (paid!!!) self-service in limited stock. Water will soon be available at the bivouac in summer. Meanwhile, there is a lake just northeast of the bivouac and in winter, plenty of snow to melt of course. So no running water, no sanitary facilities, no shower, but toilets outside. Rates: Overnight stay: adult CHF 22.-, child (under 12) CHF 16.- Drinks: sodas and beer CHF 5.- ; 1.5L water CHF 7.- ; bottle of wine CHF 20.- GPS coordinates: 2'569'780 / 1'092'100 Maps: CN Orsières 1:25000 no.1345 and CN Martigny 1:50000 no.282 There are several routes to reach the bivouac. These routes are unmarked and cross glaciers: 1) Champex - Orny hut - Trient hut - Col des Plines - Plines glacier 6 to 7 hours 2) Praz-de-Fort - Saleina hut - Saleina glacier - Plines glacier 5 to 6 hours 3) recommended ski touring route: Argentières (F) - Lognan - Argentière glacier - Col du Chardonnet - Saleina/Plines glacier 5 to 6 hours CAS Dent de Lys 1618 Châtel-St-Denis.
