The place

Bivouac at 2790 m on the shore of Lago di Balanselmo, in the Cignana basin (Valtournenche, Aosta Valley, Italy). Inaugurated in August 1955, it commemorates the mountaineer Duccio Manenti, who died in 1949 on the Rochefort ridge. Small wood-and-sheet-metal structure with 2 beds, 3 at most. Owned by the CAI Turin section, open year-round. Has lost much of its alpine significance since the opening of the Rifugio Perucca-Vuillermoz a little higher up, more comfortable and spacious, but remains open and maintained by the CAI Turin section. Access from Valmartin in 3 h 30 (1297 m of ascent) via a trail starting near the Lac de Cignana dam and the neighbouring Rifugio Barmasse.
