Ball Hut

The place

Standard 3-bunk DOC hut in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park (Canterbury), at 1,061 m. Complex avalanche terrain and unstable ground; large avalanches can cross Ball Road from June to November. Ask for advice at the visitor centre before setting out. High tramping experience recommended for routes beyond Husky Flat or the Hooker Ball Pass traverse. Daily radio check-ins at 4:45pm with weather bulletins (coverage not guaranteed). Payment at the Aoraki/Mt Cook Visitor Centre: cash, Eftpos, Backcountry Hut Pass, or hut tickets. Intentions form mandatory before departure. Rates until 30 June 2026: adult NZ$10, child NZ$5, children free.
