Asahidake Refuge
The place
Stone emergency shelter (Asahidake Ishimuro, 旭岳石室) at 1660 m, on the west slope of Mount Asahidake, the highest peak in Hokkaidō. Basic but sturdy construction, located in Daisetsuzan National Park, 20 minutes' walk from the upper station of the Sugatami ropeway. Strictly for emergency use only — comfort overnight stays are forbidden. Closed in winter, a first-floor window allows access in cases of force majeure. Important safety waypoint for hikers and skiers in the harsh alpine environment of Daisetsuzan.
