The place

Alpine DOC hut in Westland Tai Poutini National Park (West Coast), at 1,720 m above the Franz Josef Glacier on its northern side. Exceptional views over the valley and high peaks. **The third building to bear this name — prefabricated and airdropped onto the site in 1950**, a pivotal architectural period between manual portage and helicopter transport. Maintenance supported by Franz Josef Glacier Guides. Rates until 30 June 2026: adult NZ$25, youth (11-17) NZ$12.50. Standard Backcountry Hut Passes are not accepted.
