W Trek — Torres del Paine (Patagonia)
Le lieu
The W Trek in Torres del Paine National Park (Patagonia, Chile) is South America's most celebrated multi-day hike: a 5–8 day, approximately 80 km route through scenery of almost absurd dramatic beauty. The 'W' shape visits three key arms: the base of Las Torres (iconic granite spires rising 2 000 m), the Valle del Francés (glaciers and hanging seracs), and the Mirador Glaciar Grey (vast icefield). The park's combination of rugged peaks, turquoise lakes, ancient glaciers, southern beech forests and unique Patagonian wildlife (guanacos, condors, pumas) makes it one of the world's outstanding natural destinations. Winds can be ferocious; weather changes dramatically within minutes.
L’intérêt
Mirador Base Torres at sunrise — one of the world's great viewpoints. Valle del Francés and its ice avalanches (audible and visible from the trail). Glaciar Grey and its vivid blue icebergs. Lago Pehoé and its turquoise waters. Wildlife: guanacos, Andean condors, flamingos, southern lapwings.
Un peu d'histoire
Torres del Paine was established as a national park in 1959. The W Trek was developed as a structured tourism route in the 1990s as part of the park's management plan. CONAF (Chile's national park authority) and private lodge operators have jointly developed the infrastructure of refugios and glamping camps. The park receives over 200 000 visitors annually.
