L’intérêt

Abisko National Park and the midnight sun. Alesjaure lake and its reflection of the surrounding fells. Kebnekaise Fjällstation — base for summit attempts on Sweden's highest peak. Singi junction and the confluence with the Padjelantaleden. The final descent into Nikkaluokta by STF boat across Lake Laddejávrre.

Un peu d'histoire

Established by the Swedish Tourist Association (STF) in the early 20th century, Kungsleden was developed in stages between 1900 and 1920 as Sweden sought to make its Arctic wilderness accessible. The STF mountain huts — some dating from 1907 — remain the backbone of the infrastructure. Kungsleden was designated part of UNESCO's Laponia area in 1996.

Y arriver

Abisko: train on the Malmbanan line (Kiruna–Narvik, 1h30 from Kiruna / 3h from Luleå). Nikkaluokta: bus from Kiruna (45 min). Flights to Kiruna airport from Stockholm (1h30).

Matériel recommandé

Waterproof hiking boots (many river crossings and boggy terrain). Insect repellent (mosquitoes can be severe in July). Warm layers and windproof jacket (Arctic weather). Tent optional (STF huts available). Trekking poles.

La saison

Late June to mid-September. Midnight sun: mid-June to mid-July. STF huts open late June to mid-September. Snow possible in early June and after mid-September.
