Laugavegur (Landmannalaugar → Þórsmörk)
Le lieu
The Laugavegur is Iceland's most celebrated multi-day hiking trail: 55 km over 4 stages from Landmannalaugar (geothermal highlands) to Þórsmörk (glacial valley). The landscape is unlike anything else on earth — a raw volcanic tableau of obsidian lava fields, vivid rhyolite mountains in red, green and yellow, vast snowfields, geothermal hot springs and glaciers. Often combined with the Fimmvörðuháls trail (continuing to Skógar, +2 days), it is an essential wilderness experience for any keen hiker. Mountain huts (Ferðafélag Íslands) provide basic but welcoming accommodation throughout.
L’intérêt
Landmannalaugar hot springs and multi-coloured rhyolite mountains. Hrafntinnusker and its vast snowfields. Álftavatn lake set against a volcanic backdrop. Emstrur and the black sands of Mælifellssandur. Þórsmörk's lush birch forest encircled by glaciers — a surreal green oasis.
Un peu d'histoire
The trail follows ancient shepherd routes used for centuries to drive horses and sheep between highland pastures. The Ferðafélag Íslands (Touring Club of Iceland) developed the modern trail infrastructure in the mid-20th century, establishing huts and marking the route to make it accessible to hikers outside the local farming community.
