High Scardus Trail

The High Scardus Trail is a cross-border long-distance hiking route connecting North Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania along the Šar Mountains (Scardus in Latin), covering approximately 350 km over 18–22 days. The trail traverses the highest and most remote parts of the Šar range, reaching over 2 700 m, crossing alpine meadows used by traditional transhumant shepherds (bačije), pristine glacial lakes (Lakes of Popova Šapka) and dense beech and pine forests. Culturally diverse, it passes through Albanian, Macedonian and Kosovo Albanian communities.

Un peu d'histoire

Developed by an international NGO partnership in the 2010s as part of the Via Dinarica project to create a trans-Balkan hiking network, the High Scardus Trail was officially launched around 2018. It is part of the broader Western Balkans hiking initiative aiming to promote sustainable tourism in one of Europe's least-visited mountain regions.

Matériel recommandé

Mountain hiking boots. Tent recommended (limited infrastructure). Map and GPS (trail markings inconsistent). Good sleeping bag. Navigation skills essential.

La saison

June to September. High passes can hold snow until late June.
